The doctor couldn't really tell what could make a difference...whether it was the Avastin, the brain electrodes, or a combo of both.

So, thank you all so much for the prayers last week! I think I might put the electrode thing on again. I am hoping tomorrow might be the day!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-43650835619235152832012-06-08T17:13:00.000-07:002012-06-08T17:13:35.348-07:00So...it's on!Well, the electrode thing for my head is on! I got my head shaved on Wednesday first by the hair lady and then yesterday by the doctor to be extra smooth. It was a little more than I was expecting. We entered the doctor's room and there were things everywhere that we had to be learn how to use and when to use it. We (well, technically it was my dad, but still!) had to literally move a giant black luggage piece, a bag full of wires, shaver etc, and back-up supplies of extra batteries and devices. My mind is kinda reeling from that even today!

My doctor put on the first four batches of these electrode things. We have to change them every 4-7 days. They gave me four battery packs and a unit that plugs into the wall, so I can plug-in 18 hours a day. I wish my camera was working right now, so I could give you all a better description!

The funny thing is that there was a little misunderstanding with the manufacturer and insurance company. Apparently, I was supposed to hear from this guy from their company last week before this whole treatment starts. So this morning I heard that the insurance company is still in process approving me for this machine! The guy somehow misunderstood or the misunderstanding was with the doctors involved, but anyways, the company that makes it will take care of the balance if there is one and insurance doesn't approve me.

My dad calls me "Magneto" from X-Men and my sister calls me the evil queen from Captain E.O. And my mom just calls me "special" since I am one of two people using this thing in the Northwest.
My hair looks so cute right now! That is until next Thursday, when I have to shave my head! My insurance went through for the electronic head cap. I'm so excited, true - its experimental, but at least it gives me more hope.

Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-3807407330899064232012-05-30T11:23:00.003-07:002012-05-30T11:23:56.728-07:00Last Few DaysJust wanted to give you all an update. My doctor has decided that I needed to choose between treating my brain or treating my spinal cord. There are cancer cells in both, so it was tough deciding. I decided to keep treating my brain since I know what that involves. It's an infusion called Avastin that I get every two weeks.

The other kind of treatment for my spinal cord involves putting an ommaya port in my brain (which I had so many complications with last year) and then the doctors don't even know if that chemo would work that well.

The last treatment my doctor mentioned is an experimental one that hasn't been approved yet for my tumor. It is like a magnetic field that attaches to my scalp, which will have to be shaved again for this one! My insurance company is working with the manufacturer to see if they can set me up with this.

Anyways, those are my treatment options! Please pray that I'm choosing the right one and that it works out alright!
Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-38161167646680211772012-05-07T16:08:00.002-07:002012-05-07T16:08:27.313-07:00What Happens This Week?Hi everybody!

So, this week I am supposed to get another Avastin on Thursday. True - I haven't heard from the hospital yet, but I am ever optimistic! :)

Now this past week, I got shingles, which is fabulous! (pun intended!) I think I can get Avastin, but I am not too sure about the interthecal chemo, which goes into my back. Everything is in the air right now!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-6800711843778965072012-04-18T15:58:00.000-07:002012-04-18T15:58:17.631-07:00Patient StoryI just wanted to pass on my patient story at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. I think it just got published today. Here is the website: http://www.seattlecca.org/patient-story/tiffany-kennard-survivor.cfm
Thanks for checking it out!

I'll keep you updated on my MRI tomorrow. I should know something by tomorrow afternoon. Keep those prayers coming!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-37050468082990349222012-04-15T20:19:00.000-07:002012-04-15T20:19:34.096-07:00Another Couple of Those DaysWell, I should have known better than to expect chemo three weeks in a row! All of my blood levels were too low last Thursday and so chemo was withheld for another week.

Then, on Friday, I had to go to the ER for another seizure. I had some difficulty with answering questions this time and it lasted longer than normal. They did a CT scan and spoke to the neurologist at the UW Medical Center and decided that I could go home since the seizure had abated.

Other than being incredibly tired, the rest of the weekend went well.

I have an MRI and more labs scheduled next week to see what is going on and whether chemo can be restarted, so I would really appreciate prayers!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-77763365056424404382012-03-30T10:37:00.000-07:002012-03-30T10:37:34.172-07:00Another Good Thursday!I had another good chemo yesterday. I did have some minor side effects, but it's going away now. I actually had an interview yesterday for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. It went pretty well. I'll send you the link when it's finished.

I know it sounds contrite, but thank you all so much for your prayers for me and my family! We really appreciate it!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-44535832882843616772012-03-24T10:11:00.000-07:002012-03-24T10:11:21.388-07:00Happy Day!Sure-that title could mean a lot of happy things, but to me it meant finally getting on my chemo! I had a couple of weeks of delay since my platelets were low, but they are back and I was ready to roll! Thankfully I have a great nurse who pre-drugged me before and gave me good directions to stay ahead of my nausea
(which meant another lorazepam for the ride home!). I've been able to handle this new chemo quite well, other than yesterday where I was a bit sick in the morning. Now I have the same appointment next week- Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!

And now I'm just watching "Bomba The Jungle Boy" movie with my mom. Can this day get much better?? :)Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-74111316428714536112012-03-16T13:09:00.000-07:002012-03-16T13:09:12.150-07:00Same as Last WeekUnfortunately, my platelets levels are not high enough to do the chemo this week either. I am a little bit bummed out! Hopefully, they'll be at the right level next week! If not, someone is going down! :)

Please continue to pray that these numbers will rise! Thank you.Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-10458501884630556232012-03-08T12:04:00.001-08:002012-03-08T17:27:12.697-08:00Change of Plans...Again!So I found out this morning that my platelet levels are too low to do the chemo today. I will get my blood tested again on Monday and hopefully start next week. I am a little disappointed to not be starting now, but at least I can enjoy a sixty degree day!

I had my lumbar puncture yesterday. It went fine, as long as lumbar punctures go! I got one of the residents that has definitely improved since I first had him. And the technician knew I was a little tense and started giving me margarita recipes to try out when I can drink again. True-it doesn't make me forget that there is a needle in my spinal cord, but I appreciate her effort all the same! :)

My family has a sick sense of humor and finds the funny in weird situations. So, of all things, the Obama campaign called for me yesterday to ask me to join their campaign. My mom answered and said that since I'll be starting chemo, I'll probably not be the best campaigner for them. The lady on the phone totally flipped out, asked how I was doing, and ended with offering positive thoughts and prayers for me. Not sure the lady wasn't even crying!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-9592920102814682432012-03-06T20:10:00.000-08:002012-03-06T20:10:18.376-08:00This WeekThis is going to be a crazy week! I have a lumbar puncture tomorrow, which I'm not looking forward to. Thank God for lidocaine (I sincerely mean that!)! I also have to get my lungs checked out tomorrow before I start the chemo. Kinda scary that they are checking my lungs this time! It makes me start to wonder about what is in the chemo!

So I go back up on Thursday for the chemo. I don't really know much more than that now. I just ask for prayer that I would handle the chemo well and that it would work! I'd really like a "time-out" from treatment, its only been about 11 years! :)Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-55681332962530647032012-02-24T09:43:00.000-08:002012-02-24T09:43:37.746-08:00Well, crap!I had another MRI yesterday and apparently I have two lesions that they have been watching that are "glowing" more on the MRI scan. Apparently, that means those lesions are changing, which we're not sure what that means. And there are still atypical cells in my spinal cord fluid, so I have to get more lumbar punctures to monitor that.

My chemo has been changed again. I'm stopping the one I've done for three cycles and starting a new one, which is an infusion at the hospital. I'm still digesting all of this and hopefully this post makes sense. At least the new chemo doesn't have food restrictions!

I feel a little bottomed out right now. I had really been hoping for a little "time out" from treatment. Please pray for wisdom in the doctor's decision and that these lesions would go away!! I even told the doctor that I gave up chemo for Lent, but he didn't buy it!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-15652501537906065802012-01-26T17:35:00.000-08:002012-01-26T17:35:31.303-08:00Good NewsI had my long MRI today (which I had to take 2 sedatives to get through it!) and the results were mostly good. My spinal cord is still clear and the extra lesions in my brain are gone. The original tumor is still there and there is another older part that has started to change. My doctor wants to keep a close eye on it, so I'll have a follow-up MRI in 4 weeks. But, overall, it was a good visit and I'll start my 3rd cycle of this chemo next week.

Anyways, just glad that today is over! I might be going to bed quite soon! Thanks again for your prayers and support. I really appreciate it!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-1274047801025079242012-01-23T20:16:00.000-08:002012-01-23T20:16:21.849-08:00ThursdaySo, Thursday is the big MRI day. I can feel my tension rising already. I just found out the I have to get another lumbar puncture that day to check to see if there are any cancer cells left in there. I would really appreciate prayers for that day!

P.S. We survived the big Seattle snowstorm. I think we had about 8 inches of snow at our house. I took some photos that I would post, if I knew how. I still have't adjusted to my new mac yet and can't figure out how to post to a website. I can export to shutterfly, but that is about it! :) Let me know if you know how or I'm going to become one of those people that hang out at the Apple store!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-35149622818116487012012-01-11T17:18:00.000-08:002012-01-11T17:18:48.054-08:00Reality TVI took a little break from blogging over the holidays, which gave me time to catch up on reality tv! I am amazed at how much information I have learned. From Toddlers & Tiaras, I learned that breakfast can be pixie sticks and mountain dew and "flippers" are fake teeth. And you are never too young to start getting spray tanned, facials and start waxing your eyebrows!

From Dance Moms-well, actually, I can't really handle that show. I practically grew up in a dance studio and can't handle the ranting of another crazy dance teacher.

My personal favorite, though, is Finding Big Foot. It follows a team of Big Foot experts as they look for signs of Sasquatch across America. Now have they found a "squatch" yet? Not really, but they offer much insight into Big Foot behavior. My close friend Kelley Stratton sent me an email of what she's learned from the program:

Squatches are much less intimidated by women and much more apt to approach a woman
Squatches would prefer a mattress to a cold floor
Squatches are nimble gymnasts
Squatches are intrigued by music
Squatches knock to communicate with one another
Squatches are very elusive

I hope that you enjoy all of this knowledge! :) I finished my second cycle of chemo and am off of my food restriction today. This blog might be the result of my first latte in three weeks! I go back to the hospital on January 26th for another MRI and then we'll see what I do next. I feel pretty good right now, just have the typical fatigue.

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-7500837919602497492011-12-09T16:05:00.000-08:002011-12-09T16:05:06.382-08:00Good NewsI had some good news last week. My MRI looked stable and my doctor thought the lesions look smaller! This is so exciting! So I'll do another cycle of the new chemo starting next Wednesday.

And the funny thing is that my hair is actually growing back so fast, I feel like a Chia Pet! Some parts are coming back faster than others, but I'll take it. Apparently, there are two darker circles on the back of my head that make me look like a monarch butterfly (according to my mom and sister).Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-82340729661874225822011-11-30T22:21:00.000-08:002011-11-30T22:24:10.275-08:00Groundhog's DayI've been a little down and frustrated lately about my current life situation. It's frustrating to feel "stuck" and not know what the future holds, especially when treatments keep changing, how I feel keeps changing, the length of my hair keeps changing... :) I try to be optimistic, but that can be draining too. A friend said my life right now is like the movie, "Groundhog's Day", where every day is the same and a way out seems impossible.

I don't like to give up, so I really started thinking about how much better I am now than I was a year ago. I think I block it out, but I was really sick a year ago. I had double vision, had to use a walker, had seizures, and couldn't even tolerate going to a restaurant for fear that something would happen.

I started wondering what the dates where for that time and as it turns out, I had my surgery where they took out the head port exactly one year ago tomorrow. It's funny how God brings these things to mind! The night before my surgery last year, I prayed that God would be with the doctors, that it will be an easy surgery, that I would remember that God is in control and that I would have faith. The surgery was a success and now I can see what a miracle it is that I had such a recovery.

Even though I'm still going through chemo and everything, I honestly can't believe how many little miracles have happened me. I thank you for all of your prayers, which have really protected and strengthened me.

P.S. Today was my first day off my diet restriction. I don't think diet coke has ever tasted this good!!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-78266780963880260742011-11-21T15:57:00.000-08:002011-11-21T15:57:57.138-08:00Two Days LeftI am so excited since I only have 2 days left of this chemo and I've done really well with it! I haven't been as sick as the doctors told me I'd be, so its been a surprise!

The rough part is the diet restrictions. I still have another week of that and worst of all, its over Thanksgiving! The funny thing is that I thought my little diet coke problem would die down since I've been in withdrawal for almost two weeks now, but it hasn't! All I want is a large fountain diet Coke and cheese! The half juice and half 7-up doesn't quite cut it, neither does a decaf Starbucks latte!

The other thing that is a little exciting is that my hair has started growing back! I honestly didn't think it would and I was preparing for having patchy hair. It looks like peach fuzz right now, but I'll take it!

My next MRI is December 1st. If my blood levels look good, then I'll start this 6-week cycle again. Thanks again for all of your prayers.

Happy Thanksgiving!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-86066951354432910402011-11-11T17:28:00.000-08:002011-11-11T17:28:10.390-08:00Chemo Starting Out Well?I started my new chemo last week. I had one rough night, but that its! I'm a little surprised since the doctors keep telling me this is the most intense chemo. It's true that I can barely get out of bed right now, but at least I'm not getting sick.

The hardest thing is the diet I have to follow when I'm on this one chemo. No chocolate, no caffeine, and no cheese!!! Really? That is three weeks with no diet cokes or Starbucks, and its over the holidays! At least that cuts down on my caffeine budget! :)Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-42633019972997880942011-10-28T11:59:00.000-07:002011-10-28T11:59:46.554-07:00Disney, MRI Results, and Next StepSo I had a few weeks away from the hospital and finally made it to CA! I don't know why, but my parents and I thought it would be fun to go on a road trip rather than flying (like my much smarter sister!). Never again! Both of my parents ended up getting sick and the side effects of radiation caught up with me, so I was exhausted the whole time. We were quite a threesome! And don't even get me started on the Clive Cussler audiobooks my parents made me listen to! :)

When we finally checked into the Disneyland Hotel, the lady at the front desk wanted to know if we were celebrating anything. My dad and I both said no, but my mom had to volunteer that we were celebrating finishing radiation. So, she made us four pins that said we were "celebrating Tiffany" to wear during our stay. Let's just say those never saw the light of day, but we did get our beds turned down with free chocolates. So maybe it was worth something!

Disneyland was a madhouse! Some of the school districts were on fall break (really?) and there are now Halloween parties at Disneyland, so it was crazy. At least we made it on most of our favorite rides.

Oh, and they have brought back Captain EO as a tribute to M.J.! Now, not to say this happened, but some of us (my sister and I) may have seen it twice! Who can resist Michael Jackson saving the universe through song and dance? They were selling Captain EO merchandise in the store, but most of it looked like it was just taken out of storage from 1986!

Overall, it was an interesting trip. At least we made it to In-n-Out a few times!

When I got home, I had another MRI. I got the results yesterday and the scan looked stable! My spinal cord is clear with no lesions and now there are only two lesions in my brain and both have gotten smaller. Because the cancer is stable right now, the doctor wants to go ahead with another type of chemo. This is a pretty rough type of chemo and I'll probably start in the next few weeks. I am so relieved about the results. I really wasn't expecting that.

Thank you again for all of your prayers! I'll keep you updated!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-92010990777203758802011-09-22T09:48:00.000-07:002011-09-22T09:48:20.980-07:00MRI ResultsI had my MRI yesterday and the results were pretty good! The scan showed that some of the spots were actually gone! I don't have any more side effects, so I got the okay to go on my family trip to Disneyland! I am so excited for that!

Since I did so well with the radiation, the doctors want to take advantage of that and try another type of chemo when I get back from CA. I'll have another MRI and then get started on that. At least I get another month off!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-67656670276083243782011-09-19T18:50:00.000-07:002011-09-19T18:50:06.432-07:00MRI is coming! My MRI is scheduled for this Wednesday, so I just have to get through two more nights and then we'll know how my brain is doing. This is the first scan since I finished radiation, so I'm a little nervous about how things will look. I did get a new pair of shoes and a new hat, so that should help!

I just ask for prayers for Wednesday. It'll be a long day since the MRI starts at 11am and I don't see the first doctor until 2pm.

I don't really have any funny stories to share right now. I saw my grandma today and she knew who I was and asked where my sister was. This is huge since she normally thinks I am my 6'2" 49-year-old male cousin!Tiffanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11498691155512208410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163896694097485757.post-4024978490683742152011-09-02T17:47:00.000-07:002011-09-03T09:13:03.214-07:00The Waiting GameSo I finished radiation last week and now the waiting game begins! I just found out my MRI is scheduled for September 21st and then we'll find out how my brain did with the radiation. It's always nerve-wracking waiting for the results.

To keep myself from going crazy while waiting, I've decided to go back to school and attend Calvary Chapel on-line Bible College. I signed up for one class to start. I can set my own pace and have four months to complete it. I don't know what is wrong with me, but I love being a student! I was so excited when my text books came in the mail and I might have ordered a new cute bag to carry them up and down the stairs! I am a sucker for school supplies too, so I made a run to Target yesterday for a new notebook, pens, and highlighters. It's a little sick, I know, but I can't help myself! :)
I actually feel really good. I just get tired easily and have had to change my schedule so I only do one outing a day. This keeps me from getting exhausted. I had a few big outings this past week. One was when my mom and I were leaving the grocery store and a woman pushing her cart started walking with us randomly. She asked me out of the blue if I want curly hair. What? She started talking about if I'd prefer curly or straight hair (which I said curly), how her mom had cancer and died, and then how she trains dogs for people going through treatment. She ended with saying how her best friend had a brain tumor and she let her Bernese mountain dog sleep on her friend's bed. By the end, we were so confused about what was happening that we couldn't find our car. She was a sweet woman, but really? And now I want a dog! :)
The other outing that was hilarious was when my cousin and I drove through Dairy Queen for a blizzard after our healthy lunch. When we got to the window, the cashier enthusiastically asked us if we were ready for an adventure today. Immediately we both thought that we had won a sweepstakes and were headed for Hawaii or somewhere else tropical. It turns out our "adventure" was the guy who was making our blizzards has won the state Blizzard championship three years in a row and won $5000. Apparently he is the fastest Blizzard maker around! I don't understand why all of these funny things keep happening to us!
